- In 1964, Congress and Johnson and approved the (Tonkin Gulf Resolution) which gave president the power to take all necessary measures to protect US interests in Vietnam
- Most Americans supported the war to contain communism
- Misinformation from military and civilian leaders created credibility
- Tet offensive let Americans saw the brutality of the war and demoralized American public
- Nixon ended US involvement with Vietnamization which gave South Vietnam support through money and weapons rather than military
