Description:

- Progressive are usually urban middle class people who argued for a larger role of government
- Four amendment were passed during this period with a graduated income tax, direc election of senator, voting rights for women, and an effort to improve society through prohibition
- Progressives believes in:
- Society badly needed changes to limit power of big business and improve democracy
- Government was the proper agency for making these changes
- Moderate reforms are better than radical ones
- Reform minded journalists and writers expose corruption in government and business practices were called Muckrakers
- States adopted secret ballot and Direct election to end manipulation in elections
- 17th Amendment gave voter rights to elect US senators
- Child Labor were ended
- Florence Kelley and the National Consumers' League organized to pass laws to protect women from long working hours
