The Book of Psalms is written (jan 1, 900 BC – jan 1, 681 BC)
Description:
The book of Psalms is a book in the Tanakh and Bible. The book is a collection of various Hebrew hymns written by various individuals, though many are attributed to David (same guy who killed Goliath).
The book describes pre-Christian Jewish psalmody. At this time, music centered around temple rites. Psalm 150 describes how worship may have been like at this time:
1 Praise the Lord.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
Interestingly, despite being in both religion's holy books, this form of music was largely abandoned by Jews and Christians, mostly due to the destruction of the temple by the Romans in 70 CE. This means that modern Jewish and Christian music is not derived from the very music described in psalms!
