Thomas Jefferson (jan 20, 1801 – jan 19, 1809)
Description:
First Democratic Republican US president with much occuring during his presidency. Jefferson was a strict constructionist to the Consitution and the powers it gave the federal government. However this mold was broken with the Lousiana purchase, which called for loose interpretation. Jefferson however rationlized this with the newfound possiblilites to expan his agarain dream of the US. Repealing of Federalist exicse taxes such as those which sparked the Whiskey Rebellion also passed. Embargo act and refusal to recognize Haiti angers many Americans. Conflict with the Barbury pirates also mark another low point in the Presidency. Official ban on the international slave trade goes into effect, limiting imports however population continues to grow in the US. Good but troubled president.
