German Brothers War (jun 14, 1866 – jul 22, 1866)
Description:
The Austro-Prussian War, also known as the Brother's War (concurrent with the Third Italian War of Independence) saw the fracturing of any claim of Austrian hegemony of the German states. Following the war and the concurrent war in Italy, Austria lost its ally of Bavaria to Prussia, as well as what remained of Lombardia and Venezia. The defeat is notable for being one of the few times in the history of human conflict where arms technology likely played a a significant if not decisive role in victory, with Prussian breechloading weapons far exceeding the rate of fire of their Austrian muzzle loaded counterparts. This loss of territory and political influence were both significant contributing factors to the decline Austria-Hungary throughout the later half of the 19th century, and the loss of Italy in particular contributed especially to the financial woes and delayed industrial development of the Empire.
