John Quincy Adams (nov 1, 1825 – dec 1, 1829)
Description:
Was a member of the Senate. James Monroe's Secretary of State where he negotiated Florida with Spain. Helps with the Monroe Doctrine.
Election of 1825 splits in Republican party North vs South. He becomes nominee for the North while Andrew Jackson becomes nominee for the South Republicans.
Jackson and Adams end up tying. Goes to House of Representatives. Henry Clay supports Adams and helps him win. As a result, Clay is appointed to secretary of State and Jackson calls a corrupt bargain.
Presidency:
Pushes for road systems and canals. Advocate for federal government funding for science and arts.
Becomes house of representatives after presidency
In opposition of the gag rule later on.
