Election of 1817 wins against Rufus King
Friends with Thomas Jefferson. He is trained by Jefferson to be a lawyer.
Was a big supporter of the Constitution but was against it when it was supported, believing that it gave the government too much power.
Starts the Era of Good Feeling due to victory of the War of 1812.
Reruns in 1820 unopposed.
Deals with the Missouri Compromise/Compromise of 1820. Henry Clay ends up stepping in to these compromises and Monroe was not in favor of any slavery restrictions.
Monroe Doctrine: Monroe and Secretary of State John Quincy Adams. Says that war will come to European powers if they try to interfere/colonize anything within the Western Hemisphere.
