Description:

Defeated John Adams in election of 1800
Tie between him and Aaron Burr. It went to the House of Representatives and Hamilton and Jefferson was named president
He was a LAssse Faire president. This was to have a hands off approach to govvernment.
Decreases the army and the navy.
The Louisiana Purchase
Defeats Charles Pikney in Election of 1804 in a Landlside. Second term focused on keeping out of Napoleon Wars.
Embargo Act was very unpopular and it hurt the economy.
STRICT CONSTRUCTIONALIST: believed that the constitution should be interpreted how it is. No deviation

Claimed that all men were created equal(but he was racist and he made profit from slave trade)

Wanted western expansion for growing U.S. population

Reduce size of government
lower taxes
shrink the military
enable agrarian utopia

Opposed strong central government and championed rights of states. Religious freedom and separation of church from state.

Foreign policy:
Europe and America prosperous (no wars)
Army reduced to save money
Louisiana Purchase 1803
