Tanzimat (jan 1, 1839 – jan 1, 1876)

Description:

Tanzimat was a period of reform within the Ottoman Empire that was implemented in order to modernize and industrialize the aging Ottoman Regime. It was characterized by an attempt to quell nationalist movements within the empire and keep back aggressive states outside of the empire. Tanzimat led to new civil liberties (like the decriminalization of homosexuality) and economic reforms (such as those relating to the banking system), among other things.
