Battle of the Coral Sea (may 4, 1942 – may 8, 1942)

Description:

The Battle of the Coral Sea took place from May 4-8 1942. It is known to be the first major naval engagement as well as the first airplane battle in history. The start of the battle was caused by Japan from them invading Port Moresby in New Guinea. At the end of April 1942, the Japanese were ready to take control of the Coral Sea so they created air bases at Port Moresby and at Tulagi in the southern Solomons. The Allied powers figured out the Japanese plan to take control of Port Moresby and warned all available air and sea power. As the battle went on, US ships and Japanese ships were sunk. Soon, the Japanese would return back to where they came from, Rabaul, New Britain. They returned back to Rabaul due to so many planes being lost as well as the Allies harassing them with land-based bombers. This became a strategic victory for the Allies. The Allies won the defeat against the Japanese but, the Japanese won overall. Just one month after the Battle of Midway comes into place, Japanese against the US.
