Haitian Revolution (copy) (aug 22, 1791 – jan 1, 1804)

Description:

In modern-day Latin America, there is an island known as Hispaniola which is split into two: The Dominican Republic, formerly under Spanish rule, and Haiti, formerly under French rule. Inspired largely by the French Revolution, Haiti began to thirst for freedom, and a wall was formed between the rich and the poor, which led to revolution in 1791. At the time, slavery was still very much prevalent in the region. In an effort to put a halt to the revolution, laws were passed freeing slaves and giving the black citizens rights, but it was in vain. A black citizen by the name of Toussaint L'Ouverture removed the Spanish and English from the area, then issued a Constitution establishing the freedom of the former colony, and any hope of French influence was quickly dashed. As of 1801, Haiti was its own country. This loss of territory for France led Napoleon to give up its hold on the western world, and eventually led to the Louisiana Purchase, in which Napoleon sold much of modern-day America for a disproportionately low price. This has led to the establishment of America as a "superpower" country, which could not have happened without the massive land area and the events aforementioned.
