Ruth Brown (jan 1, 1928 – dec 31, 2006)
Description:
Influenced Uptown R&B --> at Atlantic Records, worked with arrangers and producers to make a style that fused elements of blues, jazz and pop
- independent record companies didn't give many rights to artists and often withheld cash (more money was made touring than recording)
- Believed black artists didn't often make billboard's mainstream chart because the chart was made from white-owned stations and the RnB list was confined to stations for blacks
- opinion on people "covering" her hits --> it was tough to have things stolen from under our noses because they had access to national television shows and radios
