Description:

-Era of Jackson
-Jacksonian Democracy: replaced Jeffersonian republicanism, which was a nation controlled by the middle and upper class, saw Yeoman farmers (own their own land) and said that their liberties would be protected by limiting the power of the central gov't. (only as big as it needs to be. Jacksonian: extension of voting rights to all white males even if they didn't have property
-put together a support network to assure wide popular support, became known Democratic Party
-He didn't campaign for himself, but his campaigners were vicious and accused John Q. Adams of being corrupt and his wife being a bigamist
-Coffin-hand bill accused Jackson of murdering his enlisted men during the Indian wars
-Jackson was the first president who either wasn't born in VA or named Adams
-considered to have the interests of the west in mind and was a self-made man (outsider president)
-replaced gov't. officials with his political supporters, people who were replaced criticized Jackson as well as the public (they were not happy that he chose friends instead of qualified people)
-Spoils System: traded government jobs for campaign favors
-Jackson liked to challenge Congress
-Indian Removal Act
-Tariff of 1828: John C. Calhoun told the states that they could nullify the law
-1832 there was another tariff that South Carolina wanted to nullify but Jackson thought that was not okay, so Calhoun and Clay made a behind-the-scenes compromise to make the tariff acceptable
-divided the National bank into pet banks
-Specie circular: ended the policy of buying land on credit, now had to use cash, which caused a money shortage
-Panic of 1837 was caused
