The Jefferson Administration Mar. 4, 1801–Mar. 4, 1809 (mar 4, 1801 – mar 4, 1809)

Description:

-Jefferson refused to accept Adams's midnight appointments which resulted in many lawsuits against the government, namely Marbury v. Madison
-Louisiana Purchase: Jefferson sent James Monroe to purchase New Orleans from the French due to restrictions on trade. Ended up getting an offer to buy the whole Louisiana territory for $15 mil. Jefferson wasn't sure the constitution gave him the power to, but he didn't want to pass up and opportunity to double the size of the US. He bought it.
-Sent Lewis and Clark to explore the Louisiana Territory
-British and French disputes brought America into them
-British began to impress American sailors where Jefferson responded with a boycott, knowing the American Navy is no match for the British navy
-Embargo Act of 1807: shut down American international trade, had disastrous economic results, especially New England who's economy collapsed
-Non-intercourse Act of 1809: reopened trade with most nations, but not Britain and France
-decided that 2 terms was enough and endorsed James Madison as the next president
