Fought to liberate Mexico
He became a leader of the Mexican independence movement. On February 24, 1821 he published his plan and promised immediate independence, equality for Spaniards and Creoles, and a ban on all religions except for Roman Catholicism. On August 24, 1821, Spain recognized the independence of Mexico. He became emperor on May 19, 1822.
