Description:
Fought to liberate HaitiJoined the slave rebellion in 1791 and became a lieutenant of Toussaint Louvreture. After Toussaint was deposed and Napoleon tried to reintoroduce slavery, he rebelled (1803) and expelled the French (Jan 1, 1804). He declared the entire island an independent country and became emperor.
