Founding of the NAACP (jan 1, 1909 – jan 1, 0)
Description:
The founding of the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909 marked the beginning of sustained efforts to gain civil rights for African Americans. Founded by an interracial group of social activists, among them Du Bois and Ida B. Wells-Barnett, the NAACP sought to secure blacks’ constitutional rights by challenging in the courts segregation and disfranchisement. In addition, the organization widely publicized lynchings and other instances of racial injustice to confront American society with the violent consequences of white racism.
