corfu crisis (aug 31, 1923 – sep 27, 1923)

Description:

Italian forces occupied the Greek Island of Corfu for a short time. Then some Italian diplomats were killed on Greek territory, leading Mussolini to lead a naval bombardment on Corfu. After the Greeks appealed to the League, the Italians were forced to evacuate but Greece was forced to pay Italy a sum of money. Mussolini didn’t allow this to rest and instead aid that the dispute had to be settled by the council of ambassadors. The League disagreed but was forced into submission when Mussolini threatened to leave the League if he didn’t get his way. This wasn't very successful because because the League did try to act fast in the beginning and stopped any further casualties, however this dispute did showcase the fact that the weakest of the great powers could get its way when Britain and France decided to sacrifice justice for cooperation.
