Emperor Meiji takes throne, Meiji Period (feb 3, 1867 – jan 8, 1912)

Description:

Cause (International): To keep up with western Europe, who had already started industrializing, Government issued Charter Oath decree of April 1868, which declared the goals the new government.

Effect (International): Ushered in several political, economic and military reforms that restructured Japan during what would be called the Meiji Restoration (e.g. modern social hierarchy, market economy modelling western Europe's, government control became centralized and limited, ideas of patriotism and strong military)

Cause (Domestic): Emperor Meiji took the throne in 1867 at an early age.

Effect (Domestic): Sparked Meiji Restoration, resistance towards shogun from anti-Western daimyos who opposed influx of foreigners and the Convention of Kanagawa.
