jean-jacques dessalines (jan 1, 1758 – oct 16, 1806)
Description:
He was born on 1758 and died on October 16th 1806. Dessalines, as governor-general, proclaimed the entire island of Hispaniola an independent country under the Arawak-derived name Haiti. Dessalines proclaimed independence and in 1805 declared himself emperor. He also made Haiti the first country to abolish slavery.
