Hillbilly and Race Records - Crichton distinctions (jan 1, 1920 – apr 7, 1930)
Description:
Ralph S. Peer coined both terms after discovering "a market nobody ever thought of"
Listed negro records as "race" records to make advertising easier --> "race" carried a positive meaning within the african american community (during harlem renaissane meant you were active in fighting for equal rights)
Hillbilly records came from the Ozarks
Crichton argues direct correlation between race and musical style --> exhibits essentialist attitude towards race and musical style (there is a characteristic for every group that can be related to biology)
