Some people believe that this was a war fought over the concept of slavery. This was a central aspect of the conflict however it was not the reason for the war at least not entirely. These were the last holdings of the same issues the nation faced with the Articles of Confederation, and apprehensions about the Constitution. The states wanted to hold on to their rights and not give into a central authority, particularly the southern states. They believed in a state's rights beyond the central government. Now slavery was a driving force of what they believed they had rights for and they did not want someone else telling them they couldn't have it.
