In the early 1980s, VHS and other home recording/playing devices were becoming popular, and anime was at the forefront of the trend. In late 1983, Urusei Yatsura was released on VHS, and in the same year, the OAV (original video animation, Japan's counterpart of a straight-to-DVD film) was created. The first OAV, Oshii's Moon Base Dallos, didn't pique anyone's curiosity, but it wasn't long before other popular titles pushed the market skyward.Added to timeline:
