The economic, social and political impacts of WW1 pushed Russia into chaos. Although Russia had the largest army in Europe, its millions of peasant army recruits had little training, few weapons, and very little food; they were ordered into battle by ill-informed commanders, only to be killed in their thousands by enemy machine guns. Faced with a string of military defeats, The Tsar felt it was his duty to take personal command of the Russian Army. however, as the defeats continued, The Tsar's decisions weakened his authority; his previous supporters (in the army and aristocracy) began to lose faith in him. Control of the government was not left to his german wife, in Petrograd ( the new name for St Petersburg). Alexandra was under the influence of Rasputin, and as a result, tsarism had few supporters by Feb 1917, when a revolution forced Nicholas to give up his thrown
