Westward Movement: 1850s (jan 1, 1850 – jan 1, 1860)
Description:
This territorial movement displaced most of the Native American people who lived in those lands for thousands of years before the arrival of European colonists. Some reasons for the westward expansion were opportunities to mine gold and silver, work in the cattle industry, and faster travel West by railroad. It stimulated the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad and added new states to the country.
