Berlin Blockade (jun 24, 1948 – may 12, 1949)

Description:

The Berlin Blockade was the first international crisis during the Cold War. The division of Germany mentioned earlier now causes problems. The United States intended to free their section of Germany to create a German republic. Since this was deep inside of Soviet territory, and the United States intended to create a capitalistic haven out of West Berlin, Stalin reacted by blockading West Berlin. Rather than backing down, the United States continued to deliver much-needed supplies to the city by airdropping them. After more than a year, Stalin finally gave in and ended the blockade. This impacted the Cold War because this was the second closest time he two sides almost went to war. It greatly strained the relationships between the two countries.
