Spoils System:Replaced government supporters with patrons.
Practice of giving/rewarding government jobs to political supporters became known as the Spoils / Patronage System.
Impact -
1. Opponents charge the practice was corrupt. 2. Jackson claims, “To the victory belongs the spoils.”
Nullification Crisis:
1. South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification is the right to nullify/reject tariff claiming States’ Rights 2. South Carolina threatens to secede from the Union because high tariffs are hurting their economy. 3. Jackson threatens to send troops. 4. Henry Clay’s compromise has Congress reducing the tax gradually.
