Civil War (apr 9, 1948 – jan 1, 1957)
Description:
A liberal party presidential candidate was assassinated and the act sparked rioting which resulted in 5,000 deaths in the early years and over 200,000 total. A conservative was elected and was known as Mariano Ospina Perez and all of those considered as radical a liberal or in support of those beliefs outlashed which caused further violence.
~This event takes away from democratization because the military was virtually powerless and there were major divisions between liberal and conservative parties.
