The Battle of Marne (sep 6, 1914 – sep 12, 1914)
Description:
After a month of lightning offensives in Belgium and north-eastern France, German troops were within a few dozen kilometres of Paris.
Paris requisitioned 700 taxis to transport 5,000 to 6,000 combatants to the front.
The main battle was fought from 6 to 9 September. German forces retreated. Casualties on each side were tremendous: nearly 100,000 dead or missing on each side and twice as many wounded.
