In January 1917, to break the suffocating British sea blockade, Germany launched an all-out submarine war, attacking every ship en route to Britain, even neutral merchantmen, in the hope of hastening the end of the war by economically stifling Britain.On 26 June the first American convoy arrived in France. The expeditionary force reached 1 million men by the summer of 1918 and 2 million by the end of the war.
Almost 117,000 US soldiers died during the war.
