The Child-Saving Movement (jan 1, 1850 – jan 1, 1890)

Description:

The Child-Saving Movement, was focused on the urban poor, trying to keep children sheltered, fed, and when possible and old enough, employed. Private and community organizations helped to provide some unique programs for young people, including probation supervision for status offenders and minor delinquents. Child- saving was a conservative and romantic movement, designed to impose sanctions on conduct unbecoming youth and to dis- qualify youth from enjoying adult privileges. The child- savers were prohibitionists, in a general sense, who believed in close supervision of adolescents' recreation and leisure. Many scholars believe that the child savers promoted altruism and guidance but then others say: "the child savers should in no sense be considered libertarians or humanists".[6] This is based on the research that the indiscriminate arrest, indeterminate sentencing, military drill, and hard labor were the concrete results of their reforms.
