Description:
When Missouri requested statehood it was highly debated because it would mess up the balance of free and slave states. The Missouri Compromise of 1820, allowed Missouri to enter as a slave state, but at the same time admitted Maine as a free state to keep the balance. (Missouri Compromise, 2009.)Added to timeline:
