Joseph Joachim (apr 1, 1831 – nov 1, 1907)
Description:
Violinist and composer who was concertmaster of Liszt's orchestra in Weimar, the command center of the New German School. Born in Hungary, Joachim receied his early training in Vienna before studying in Leipzig with Mendelssohn, who knew from personal experience what it meant to be a prodigy. Joachim was devastated by Mendelssohn's early death, and he next accepted the Weimar position under Liszt. It did not take long for Joachim to realize, however, that Liszt's musical agenda, let alone his actual music, represented the opposite of his own aesthetic ideals.
After resigning from the Weimar job in his early twenties, Joachim met Robert and CLara Schumann and soon thereafter introduced them to Brahms, with whom he had recently been performing.
