Jean-Philippe Rameau (jan 1, 1683 – jan 1, 1764)

Description:

French court composer after Lully. The Rameau style was the Lully style intensified: richer in harmony, more sumptuous in sonority, weightier in texture, more heroic in rhythm and rhetoric, more impressively masterminded than ever.

Despite the initial press war opposing them, Rameau became Lully's heir, upholding the great French tradition that would soon be threatened by the Italians.

Rameau's Hippolite et Aricie was apparently the first musical work to which the adjective "BAroque"was attached (pejoratively)
