Claudio Monteverdi (jan 1, 1567 – jan 1, 1643)
Description:
Monteverdi recognized the ars perfecta style as a venerable tradition representing what he called the prima pratica (first practice) but exalted the new style, the seconda pratica (second practice), claiming, "the words are the master of the music."
Studied with Marc'Antonio Ingegneri, a Counter-Reformation composer who was the music director at the cathedral of Cremona.
