Johann Joseph Fux (jan 1, 1660 – jan 1, 1741)

Description:

Austrian church composer who published a treatise called Gradus ad Parnassum. Its connection to Palestrina was emphasized to enhance its prestige value. Indeed, Fux cast the whole treatise in the form of a dialogue between the master Äloysius" (=Palestrina) and the pupil Josephus (= Fux). Either in itself or as absorbed by later writers, Fux's treatise remained current into the twentieth century, when several other major counterpoint texts derived from Palestrina were written, further updating the stile antidco as a purely pedagogical style.
