Description:
Nazi authorities and Hungarian police deported Jews living in the Sighet ghetto by train to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The trip lasted several days. At Auschwitz, SS officers separated men and women. Elie Wiesel and his father, Shlomo, were selected to work. Wiesel’s older sisters, Hilda and Beatrice, were also selected for forced labor. The SS murdered Wiesel’s mother, Sarah, and younger sister, Tzipora, in the gas chambers.
