World War 1 (jul 28, 1914 – nov 11, 1918)

Description:

The first world war was popular among young patriotic Germans who thought it would be over quickly. In reality, bombs, poison gas and machine gun fire wore down the German trench positions gradually and inevitably.
For Germans at home, thongs weren't much better because the great British navy cut of supply ships to Germany and a lot of supplies had to be diverted to the war effort. This meant shortages of food, medicine and clothing.
In 1915, 500 women protested in front of the parliament buildings and in 1916 over 10,000 Berliners assembled to protest the war and the government.
By 1918, the once mighty economy of Germany and its people were on the verge of collapse. There were huge food shortages and a deadly flu epidemic was sweeping the nation and at the start of the year military leaders told politicians that there was no hope and that Germany may be treated more fairly if it became more democratic so the Kaiser transferred some power to the Reichstag on the 5th October.
In October sailors refused to follow orders and were supported by workers in the towns nd soldiers had to be sent in to govern.
