Paul Broca (jan 1, 1824 – jan 1, 1880)

Description:

French Neurologist

-Mostly focused on studying the left frontal lobe and its connection to language

-Patient in 1861, Leborgne, known as "Tan" because that was the only syllable he spoke
-----6 days after studying him, he died, so he autopsied his brain and discovered what he coined as "expressive/motor aphasia" in the left frontal lobe

-Searched for patients who had lost the ability to speak, coherently or altogether, and meet with them (and/or perform an autopsy) to find the root
-----Every patient whom he autopsied had damage to the same area in the left frontal lobe
-----Concluded that this area must be crucial to speech and it is now known as "Broca's Area"
