Olmecs (jan 1, 1200 BC – jan 1, 400 BC)
Description:
The Olmecs were the earliest known major Mesoamerican civilization. The Olmecs occupied the tropical lowlands of modern-day Mexican states Veracruz and Tabasco. It has been speculated that the Olmecs derived in part from the neighboring cultures. The Olmecs were apparently the first Mesoamerican people to understand the concept of zero, develop a calendar, and create a hieroglyphic writing system.
