French Revolution (jan 1, 1789 – jan 1, 1799)

Description:

Estates General voted to counter economic ruin by taxing the nobility and clergy by strategic use of the Third Estate (1789).
The Assembly refused to close until France had a constitution. The king advanced troops onto Paris which resulted in riots culminating in the Protestant taking of Bastille (1789).
Louis XVI capitulated and permitted the formation of the National Constituent Assembly which produced the Document of the Rights of Man and the Citizen.
Leaders of French Revolution rejected all Christianity as superstitious.
After the Revolution, the separation of the church and state was an increasingly common reality.
Haiti became independent as a consequence.
