Philip Jakob Spener (jan 1, 1635 – jan 1, 1705)
Description:
German. Father of pietism (technically a title for the German movement). He was seen as a new Luther. Emphasized the priesthood of all believers to soften the edge between laity and clergy. Called to return to the Scriptures.
August Francke (1663-1727) was Spener's greatest follower.
Pietism established modern Protestant missions.
