Charles I (jan 1, 1625 – jan 1, 1649)
Description:
Son of James I. Likewise clashed with Puritans in Parliament. He dissolved Parliament three times (and reconvened it twice) between 1625-29.
Because of his partnership with William Laud the Archbishop of Canterbury (beginning in 1633), war broke out in England and Scotland. He asked Parliament for funds in the war in 1640, but they refused. He dissolved them again; thus receiving the name of Short Parliament.
Long Parliament was established (which likewise did not favor Charles I). In 1641, it ruled that it could not be dissolved unless Parliament voted in agreement (hence, long).
