Description:

Germany

1. The steps Bismark took to build up the nation of Prussia were making military reforms and gaining control of German States through diplomacy, alliances, and war.

2. Germany

3. Nationalism is what motivated people of German ethnicity in different countries or states to want to form a single German nation and unify all the German states.

4. Bismark industrialized Germany by increasing production of coal and steel, and ordering railroads to be built throughout Germany.

5. Realpolitik - A politician who acts based off the best thing to do to make a situation better, rather than just what aligns with their ideological beliefs.

Italy

1. Italians wanted to be unified because there were many nationalists who were tired of being ruled by foreign powers and wanted to rule themselves. The two countries who controlled Italian states were Austria and France

2. German Unification helped Italy unify themselves because the Austro-Prussian war weakened Austria and made it easier for Italy to gain back its Northern Italian states from Austria.

3. Some initial problems facing Italian unification were the pope leaving the papal states, and many social differences between northern and southern Italy causing conflict.

Austria-Hungary

1. Some of the different ethnic groups in the Austrian Empire were German Austrians, Hungarians, Czechs, Poles, Ukrainians, Serbs, and Slavs.

2. It divided Austria-Hungary two parts of an empire each having a bicameral legislature and its own constitution, both under a single monarch Francis Joseph.

3. The Austrian government formed the dual monarchy because they feared uprisings from the other ethnic groups and the destruction of their Empire, so they gave more power to the Hungarians to help prevent it.
