Enlightenment Period (jan 1, 1596 – jan 1, 1900)

Description:

Transition from beginning with God to beginning with self for knowledge. Nature is no longer viewed doxologically but as something to harness through science to be used by man. Starting with reason is the mark of the modern method.

Scientific knowledge vs religious knowledge: The first is known by reason; the second is known by revelation. Disconnected realities. Faith and reason are split into two unrelated spheres for the first time.

Three periods in this Period:
17th-18th centuries were not hostile to Christianity.
19th century hostility to Christianity is evident.
20th century, Christianity is largely ignored as primitive superstition.
