Sino-Chinese war (aug 27, 1894 – apr 17, 1895)
Description:
The Japanese, as a newly emerged modern power, decided to invade the Korean peninsula. As the Qing was in control of Korea, this led to a full out war between China and Japan. The Qing lost the war, showing how the self-strengthening movement was not as successful. The Qing was greatly humiliated and was forced to pay an amount equivalent to 15% of Japan's total GDP.
