Castro Being President (jan 1, 1959 – feb 24, 2008)
Description:
In his early years as president Castro refused to hold early elections and wanted to deepen their friendship with the Soviet Union. This upset the U.S. government so they broke off diplomatic relations with Cuba in January, 1961. U.S. - Cuba relations were further damaged when the Bay of Pigs invasion happened in which 1500 trained Cuban exiles unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow the Cuban government.
