Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (oct 24, 1632 – aug 26, 1723)
Description:
* he was a linen merchant who developed lenses to view the quality of the threads which was a single-lens microscope magnified 300. Leeuwenhoek was the 1st to observe living microbes that he called "animalcules" in 1674. The first representation of bacteria is to be found in a drawing by Leeuwenhoek in 1683.
* never went to a university. Just worked at a textile shop and then started his scientific work on his own
* (interesting fact) had 5 kids but only 1 survived
