Occupation: At the age of sixteen he was keeping a store at Hughesdale, and when only nineteen was postmaster at that village.

In 1874, he went into partnership with his father, and upon the latter's death, in 1885, succeeded to the business. In 1878 Mr. Hughes was made treasurer of the Hughesdale Manufacturing Company. In 1892 the Bradford Soap Works was consolidated with the above company. Mr. Hughes was the manager of the company.
