Mannerism/ Late Renaissance (jan 1, 1527 – jan 1, 1580)
Description:
Art that breaks the rules; artifice over nature
Mannerism is a period of art that came out of the high Renaissance in Italy and it's also known as the late Renaissance period. It lasted from about 1520 to 1580. Stylistically, Mannerism encompasses a variety of approaches influenced by, and reacting to, the harmonious ideals associated with artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, and early Michelangelo. Where High Renaissance art emphasizes proportion, balance, anatomy, etc. Mannerism exaggerates and distorts such qualities, often resulting in compositions that are asymmetrical or unnaturally elegant. Notable for its artificial (as opposed to naturalistic) qualities, this artistic style privileges compositional tension and instability rather than the balance and clarity of earlier Renaissance paintings. Mannerism in literature and music is notable for its highly florid style and intellectual sophistication.
